I'm hoping someone with experience with carpet removal can help me. I'm taking up some ancient carpet which is stuck to the floor boards with what appears to be double sided tape. The carpet pulls off but leaves an impossibly sticky layer of adhesive behind which defies all efforts to remove it. I've tried scraping, a hair dryer and white spirit, all to no avail. Any suggestions (heat gun? other solvents?). I need a quick fix as I promised the lady of the house to get the job done before I head off to the crags! Thanks in advance, Rob.

In reply to Rob: I find xylene to be very good at removing glue from old tape. Use with care in a well ventilated room. Read any safety leaflets!

Wd40 might dissolve it?

What are you doing to the floor after?

If recovering it then a good scrape / HD sander will do the job.

In reply to Rob:

A single-edged razor blade scrapper. Far better than a stanley blade scrapper and lower angle. We use them for getting stubborn stickers off stuff.

Search auction site for 'personna' or 'American line' razor scrapper. 100 blades plus holder about a tenner.
