Brown Cove today, if the forecast plays out as it is supposed to this week, things could start into next week possibly!

might be gone by tomorrow - nature of winter in Lakes
In reply to Wesley Orvis:

Anyone caught climbing on this in that condition should be slapped.

In reply to Rog Wilko:

Not necessarily huge amounts of precipitation before cooling down again pretty quickly after tomorrow, with more snow.

cracking - winters really started
 Scottydog 08 Dec 2014
Was on helvellyn yesterday! Snow and hail storms were pretty fierce early on! Nice and cold and a nice amount of snow around, as you would expect nothing climbable but if the weather holds it won't be long!

In reply to Wesley Orvis:

Think so Wesley, ran into a guy coming down Striding Edge who said he had climbed in that area, must have been well tough as the conditions on S Edge were very unpleasant with quite deep soft snow covering the rocks making progress very difficult. Turned back half way myself after being blasted by hail showers.Others I met also turned back off Swirral due to the conditions
In reply to higherclimbingwales:

Paddy cave posted it was climbable and reported frozen turf.

Sorry mate but if paddy says there's routes in, there's routes in.

In reply to Bob Bennett aka Last Thursday:

In reply to Chris Huntington:

Turf wasn't frozen, very little ice and deep powdery snow

OP Wesley Orvis 13 Dec 2014
In reply to Wesley Orvis: amazing how many people were swimming up gullies today on helvellyn.

 John Kelly 13 Dec 2014
In reply to Wesley Orvis:

aye the snow wasn't that nice, powder on cusp of melting, it was a rock climbing day really
 StuartCJones 13 Dec 2014
2 Gully was fine this morning, no swimming required (although harder than Grade 1 on the upper sections). Easy steps up to 3/4 height and then some decent consolidated snow, frozen turf and ice (!). I had to take a slightly harder line over the ice bulge to make use of the best ice and neve, but the picks stuck like a dream. The top out was easy. I think then gent ahead of me did the left branch finish, not sure how he got on.
In reply to Wesley Orvis:
Sharp Edge was nicely challenging today, everything frozen, good snow covering and sometimes strong winds.
The south facing cornices on the top of Blencathra have built impressively well in today's northerly winds.

My friend says if Geoff Monk at MWIS was around a century earlier he is so accurate he would be tried for witchcraft. Whilst most forecasts today were fairly good, MWIS added a chance of 1-2 hours continuous snow late morning. On Blencathra the snow started at 10.15 and carried right on until 11.45. Spot on MWIS!
