Mate, I bought a guitar....christ...22 years ago. I've never had any professional lessons, I spend a couple of weeks plucking a few chords out of it, then put it down for a little bit, then pick it up again. Sometimes months go by without picking it up (sometimes years).
I'm terrible. I've got fat fingers, no ear for music, I can't read music (can manage with tablature). I spend so much time between getting it down off the shelf that I lose all the calluses off my fingers and have to start the hardening process off from scratch
But there are a couple of tunes I can pick a few notes out of and string a few chords together and I love it.
I can handle the opening into to Alive by Pearl Jam (in fact there's a few pearl jam songs I can pick a few sections out of, like Jeremy, release. I can do a few metallica bits (I can do a mean Enter the Sandman). I can almost do the opening of PF wish you were here.
I did all of this on an accoustic, and then I had a go on an electric and when I tried the enter the sandman intro, it sounded so awesome (to me at least), I couldn't get the smile off my face..
So screw it - as long you enjoy yourself...
I wish I had the opportunity to maybe get together with other people as rubbish as me to develop a little bit. It would be quite fun.
