Every so often a large friendship group of us (adults, kids and teenagers) get together from all over the world, this year we're gathering in Newtonmore for New Year week. Whenever we get together we have a show night and this years theme is, obviously, tartan! (here's a clip of me in a previous new year when the brief was Musicals... youtube.com/watch?v=zUhCA8-VgxE& )

Our Lass and I have decided to sing a song that is classically Scottish, but not necessarily in the traditional sense. We quite fancied 500 miles but hate the song so it was always a non-starter.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Tony

If the theme is tartan then it's got to be a Bay City Rollers number...

Would rather hear a folky number like Wild Mountain Tyne...

I think that's a version purely for listening to - In comparison, almost everyone else seems to murder the song.

Newtonmorons are known for their shinty prowess. How about 'The Shinty Referee'

Not really old enough to be classic, but I like Paulo Nutini.

Me an the missus danced round the living room to this many times in the noughties. Great tune and has local relevance considering we live in Falkirk, and who the song's about.

In case you do go wrong, then you need a duet surely? It's Scottish and not traditional, I don't think it's what you're after, but it's good so I'm linking anyway - The Burns Unit

The near 30 year time leap with Jools Holland is purely coincidental.
