I've wild camped there loads of times. Usually down by the sea near The Cuttings or by the entrance to Blacknor North. I don't think it's strictly allowed but we didn't make a mess, pitched late and packed up early. The YMCA is £15 a night or you can hire a caravan in the caravan park near The Cuttings for as little as £30 a night.
