I've been given a FrankenStrat - it's a right-handed Strat body with a 12-string neck. I want to get rid of the neck and put a standard Strat neck on it. But there's a catch - I play left handed. Can I put a left handed neck on a right handed body? Or am I barking up the wrong tree here; would it be better to fit a right handed neck and just change the nut and string it left handed?

BTW, the Afro wig and psychedelic scarf are already on order

I think if the fixing are matches (i.e. is the same size) then the only difference with the neck would be the orientation of the headstock; I think the bolt arrangement would be symmetrical. It might be though that you do need to be careful to buy the correct sized neck to fit the body, which would be the main difference between a left- and right-handed guitar.

In short, I don't really know. Have fun!

(These look like they expect the neck pocket to be a standard size. http://www.warmoth.com/Guitar/Necks/Strat_WarmothPro.aspx)

Stick a right handed neck on and flip the nut so you look like hendrix!

I think an lh nech on an rh guitar will look a mess

On the 12 string, does it have the same "through the body" stringing system as the 6 string, or is it a completely different setup? Also, wouldn't you also need a new bridge / saddle?

In reply to Tony Naylor:

I play left handed myself and I would personally try and swap it for a left handed guitar. I never feel comfortable playing right handed guitars strung left handed. The balance feels all wrong and the knobs get in the way and I find switching pick ups is awkward too. In any case if you are keen to keep the guitar I would put a standard right hand neck on it and just change the nut or even leave the right handed nut on and adjust the saddles to compensate, you can do that with Strats. I think a left handed neck on a right handed body just doesn't look right.

Possibly the most complicated way of playing L hand R hand guitar.

Ok, having done a bit of Google image searching, I reckon you could probably get away with it, BUT...if I were you, I'd take the much easier (and possibly cheaper) route of simply selling the 12 string and buying a left handed 6 string.

Cheers, JW
