Not really Alpine but I'm based in Neufchatel for a week and looking to get out for a day or so , just wondering what recommendations people have. Will be solo , I am MLs so can navigate etc. Wouldn't mind getting into the snow line , I have plenty of British winter experience but no glacial skills. Also flying out with easy jet so would like to plan so as to know what kit to take..

Thanks

I would recommend Creux du Van. This link contains accounts of several hikes to it. They are mostly in German, but also contain minimaps and pictures. So they may still be of help even without knowledge of German.

Cheers and have fun!

will you have a car? as you can access lots of terrain very easily from Neuchatel. The Jura currently has snow sitting on it above ~1100m but its fairly soft so winter-walking boots are sufficient, and from Neuchatel you can easily get up high enough to get to the snow line. A big drop in freezing level + snow forecast towards the end of the week so will likely come down further.

Lots of great walking around St. Croix, up and around Aiguilles de Baulmes near the climbing areas. If you check out the mapping link you can probably plot yourself some great paths to suit conditions/access;

Hope that helps

Thanks Guys I will have a good look at links and thanks for the mapping site. I will have a car so can get about. Few ideas at the moment as I don't go until the end of Feb. I wouldn't mind having a go at ski touring although I would need some lessons. Could hire a guide possibly once im out there.

thanks

To be honest with the above mapping link I've yet had a need to buy a map for the Swiss alps/jura/prealps - I just use a good quality printer with good quality paper and a thin A5 clear plastic wallet and I can print off exactly the sections I need for the day without needing to deal with huge maps folded badly and blowing around in the wind so sorry, can't help you in Neuchatel. I know in Lausanne any gear shop will have them...

The Jura is great for XC skiing, you'll be able to hire the gear easily ( around 10 euros a day in France, not sure how much on the Swiss side of the range) & although one or two posters here will tell you you need lessons, if you can walk, you'll be able to get about & have fun (the lessons help if you want to be efficient &/or stylish)

There is a webtool with which you can acess the excellent Swisstopo maps:

http://map.geo.admin.ch/

They can be bought here (or at many resellers):
