Any good?

Never seen the man in action. The title of the presentation is 'Mind over Matter'.
Only ever seen Andy K and he was funny enough.

But anybody who named his boat 'The Deflowerer' get my vote!

In reply to 220bpm: Any more pointers on where and when for mick fowler - part of a lecture 'tour'? Personally i'd quite like to go to a lecture by him on account of his routes in scotland.
OP 220bpm 17 Oct 2003
In reply to lewis:
they were only advertising the three dates 10,11,12 Nov.

I assume they will all be Scotalnd (Embra, Glasgie, Dundee). Might be touring elsewhere but not noted on the flyer I saw.

Mick Fowlers lectures are ace. Great sense of humour, timing and delivery.
IMHO He has to be one the greatest British climbers of all time.

Cheers, good to know that whole £5 hasnt been wasted . All proceeds to Mountain Rescue as well, fair play!
> IMHO He has to be one the greatest British climbers of all time.
No arguements there. The variety and scope of extremes climbed leaves me shaking my head
> Mick, if you're reading this... Can I come climbing with you? Pleeeease?
Me too?

In reply to 220bpm:

Amazing man, good lecturer, I'd go if I were you.

He has a "strange" voice though... slightly pleading tone. I remember thinking that if I spoke to him with no knowledge of who he was I'd probably try and escape the conversation. Of course this only goes to show that first impressions count for nowt. THE man's a HERO!!!

IMHO a lot of celebrity climbers aren't natural lecturers. Not surprising since their natural environment's a small team or pair not an auditorium of 200 people. Mick's a good raconteur though. I'd recommend him.

In reply to Paul Saunders:
I had always assumed that Mick Fowler would have a hard Northern accent and work as a plumber orsomething. Quite strange to see him on TV sat in an office talking in a soft voice.

I saw Mick Fowler lecture in Leeds a few years ago. I would deffo go again. He was excellent and I'd be very surprised if you were disappointed.

How was font?

In reply to 220bpm: You can see the man in action in Stirling Albert Hall on Friday 14th of November where he will be talking about his Chinese route. Dennis Gray will also be there talking about his life of climbing with the greats. See the Ochils Mountaineering Club web site for more details.

In reply to yer maw:

OMC annual lecture is on Friday 14th
November in Stirling's Albert Halls.
Admission is £5 and doors open from 6.30pm for a 7.30pm start.
There will be a bar, prize raffle draw and also exhibitors stalls in the
lesser hall upstairs.
First on is elder statesman Dennis Gray with a talk entitled "My Life and
Hard Times" - the acclaimed author of "Rope Boy" etc will talk about his
personal experiences climbing all over the world for over 5 decades. Next on
is Mick Fowler who will talk about his award winning new 'super route' that
he and Paul Ramsden put up in China in a lecture titled "SIGUNIANG - SHARP
AND POINTED IN INNER CHINA"
As Mick says, "The doors are opening to inner China and there is a lot on
offer - from medium grade unclimbed peaks to some of the most spectacular
lines around. An accessible area which must surely be on the verge of a boom
in interest.
This lecture covers the April 2002 first ascent of the North Face of
Siguniang (6250m) in the Qionglai range, Sichuan. The climb took 8 days
round trip from base camp and resembles a mega version of the Dru Couloir at
Chamonix. It won the Piolet D'Or and Golden Piton awards for the best
mountaineering achievement of 2002."
