I read the head of a bike company saying he prefers alu bikes to be in the pro team supplied by his company for that reason, that damage is easier to gauge by eye was how he put it, and don't need as much care to be taken in being loaded onto car roofs and things.
That's not to say carbon can't be old boots tough in mountain bikes and have wonderful things done with it while being light weight, to avoid a 'this material is best' style thread developing. (:~))
