Machynlleth/Dolgellau climbers or club?

I'm thinking about a move, possibly into Mid Wales (where you get a lot of house for your money and North & South Wales are within striking distance). A place mid way between Machynlleth & Dolgellau has currently caught my eye.

From what I can see on UKC there's not much of a climbing community in the Machynlleth & Dolgellau area - anyone want to tell me I'm wrong?

As far as I can see, that area has good access to Cader Idris & Craig Cywarch (which I've never been to, admittedly) so it doesn't look *that* bad a spot...

if you'll be interested just drop me an email ligotti@gazeta.pl
thanks!

I'm in Bristol, but climb up that way fairly regularly. I don't know much about the scene there but there are some cracking routes around, and hopefully an updated guidebook fairly soon.

You can be in the main Snowdonia group or Gower in a couple of hours too.

A bit longer than that to get to the Gower I would think!

Hi -I work in Dolgellau two days a week so would be good to do some climbs after work time or on a saturday morning
I lead up to VS but dont mind harder if needed.
In terms of winter climbs Ive not done a lot above grade II but again Im confident in most terrain

Lots of excellent Gritstone round those parts

Thanks Chaps, good to hear that there are some folk in the area.

No final decision made as yet - watch this space - but if I go for it I'll definitely be looking for partners!

A long shot I know, but does anyone know if there's any demand for SPA/ML leaders in the area? If I could pick up some work in that line (whilst working towards MIA) that would be very welcome...

You are probably right but I wouldn't expect it to take long with an early start.

Mach/Corris is a good place to live - fairly central for access to both North and South - Severn Bridge/Manchester are both about 2 hrs, 5 hrs gets you to Edinburgh or Southampton and the train is pretty good if you want to see the big cities. There's a climbing wall in the sports centre in Mach, but that's just been closed until further notice apparently. The area can feel a bit more cosmopolitan than other areas of rural Wales - a good mix of the CAT folk (lots of alt energy micro companies and a fair bit going on, it's surprising what specialist skills are lurking in the hills) and traditional Welsh farming communities (it's a fairly strong Welsh speaking area and Dolgellau side is stronger again). Heaps of less well known hills for walking and a more "Scottish" (but on a much smaller scale!) feel to the crags - you've got to be prepared to put a bit of effort in but some great climbing. Tremadog and the Pass (or Pembroke if you leave before the tourists rise!) aren't too far way (45 min to Tremadog, hour and a bit to the pass, 2 1/2+ hrs to S Pembroke). I've not climbed for a long time, so don't know of a scene, but there's heaps of people in to mountain biking if that's your thing, which the area is also good for. Feel free to email me if you have questions. Might be worth looking at Huw Gilbert's blog - he seems pretty active locally doing guiding.
Just be aware that parts of Corris are colder than Siberia in winter
Cheers

I once walked from Aberystwyth to Machynlleth and when I got there I turned around and walked back again. In truth I was trying to hitchhike to Dolgellau but no bastard would pick me up. Can't say that I recommend the walk but I have lived in South Wales, Mid Wales and North Wales and they have all been truly wonderful places to be.
