It is a mess, and very sad. I went to Crimea a few years ago and it's a beautiful place, and the people were really friendly. It's a great place for climbing too, really popular area for it. I have been really saddened to see conflict going on. However, sadly the Tartars were also persecuted when Crimea was Ukrainian. I have no figures to hand to say if it's worse than it was or not, but they were definitely persecuted. Of course the Russians (USSR) started the persecution in the first place, just a lot further back!

I was also in Crimea about 4 years ago. it's hard to believe this is happening in a place where, just not long ago, it felt safe and stable. Poor people- most of them just want to get on with their lives

My only friend from Crimea is a Tatar - I have no doubt from what she said that things are far worse since the Russians took control.
