Rockcity is one of the most established climbing walls in the UK, originally founded over 20 years ago. To bring it up to date with modern trends there has already been some major changes as part of a £250,000 refurbishment plan. The initial project has been to build something unique to UK climbing walls and comes in the form of a huge bouldering cave above a rising floor joining two separate levels. With 400m of climbing surface and at a cost of £55,000 the new facility allows for route style problems over 25m in length with a vertical gain of 10 metres!

This facility totally bridges the gap between bouldering and routes. There is no where else in the UK with such a sustained overhanging climbing surface making it perfect training for international competitions or Spanish style routes. And as the area is fully matted it has the convenience of training without a partner and without ropes and associated equipment. Current circuits and routes set by Leah Crane, Steve McClure and Malcolm Smith with blocs up to &c+ and routes hitting 8a+.

Internationally acclaimed climber Malcolm Smith and resident route setter Steve McClure have both been extremely impressed and motivated by what is likely to be an industry leading facility.

’The wall is one of the best finished and varied bouldering walls that I’ve climbed on. The tunnel section sets a new standard in power-endurance training. It’s great to be able to climb 40 move plus upward problems just off the matting. Only Parrissellas cave can compete for enduro-bouldering but Rockcity smells better.’ – Malcolm Smith

‘The new addition to Rockcity is a unique training facility. For three dimensional steep power endurance climbing there is nothing better, and its just so much fun too!‘ – Steve McClure

‘The Abyss is a great addition to Rockcity and we were delighted that the refurbishment, including this wall extension has been supported with assistance from the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership’s Growing the Humber programme with 30 per cent of the investment coming from the fund’- Mark English, Centre Manager
