At the side of our house we've got a wide passage way which is blanked off with some fencing. This is about 6feet high and about the same in width. It's made of rough sawn timber.

I'm planning on replacing it with a pair of gates which I want to make as attractive as possible, preferably with planed timber. I had thought about using hard wood but I think that would be too expensive so will probably finish up with planed (unpainted but perhaps stained)deal. Problem is I assume deal won't weather as well as hard wood so can anyone advise the best way to weather treat deal.

Thanks.

In reply to FesteringSore:

Use something like Douglas Fir or Larch and stain it how you like, they are moderately rot resistant. Anything with pressure treatment is likely to bleed through any paint or stain you use. Red Cedar is nicer!
