So with GPS chips costing $6 these days, you'd think there would be a good option for budget GPSs. Don't need anything fancy, just a thing that will give me a position if I switch it on in a white out. Compass and ability to use national grids as well as lat/long considered a bonus.

But there's precious little information on two things that matter from a reliability point of view: number of satellites the thing can lock onto, and battery life. Does anyone know what the score is with these things?
Another option I guess is to get a good 2nd hand unit. If going down that route what would you recommend?
