Masonry wall collapse at Bowden Doors #3, 4 kbLocal Climber and UKC User Odox reports on a dry stone wall collapse at the popular sandstone crag of Bowden Doors, Northumberland:

What remains of the masonry wall is not very stable and it would not be a good idea to loiter on the path or at the base of these routes!"

It looks from the photos like Castle Wall that's affected, not Castle Crack. Either way, its a popular area and those wall blocks are big!

Some problems are suffering from traffic... but it's hardly like the whole crag is falling down?

Why has the wall fallen down? Is it climbed over by a lot of people or was it of natural causes?

Good question. Probably a combination of factors, weather has played a part as have climbers/walkers crossing the wall. The point over that section of the wall has been deteriorating for a while, walking higher up the hill offered a better section of wall to cross. We may look into the possibility of installing a proper stile crossing point if the BMC can help out.

That would be great, thanks. I would hate that it was climbers that knocked the wall down or contributed significantly to it falling down, and then not doing anything about repairing it.
