I'd be grateful for recommendations for a hotel stay in the Lakes this April. I'd ordinarily be camping but thought I ought to treat my wife seeing as it's her 40th ; - )

This is a bit shameless as I have a family connection, but you could try http://www.theglenrothay.co.uk/ at Rydal - loads of character and right in the middle of the Lakes.

As it's a treat have a look at:
http://www.holbeckghyll.com/
or: http://www.broadoakscountryhouse.co.uk/

Both are top notch

Rydal Caves are quite nice, failing that, the All Weather Gym at Hodge.

You could use the Rave Cave at Hodge but it smells a little "busy".

Thanks to you and Epilleptic for those suggestions !

Ta for that Rubbishy. I'm sure she would be up for bivvying in Hodge. How long it would take the doctors to extract my nads from where they were lodged is another matter..
In reply to lummox: For a special treat you really ought to try the Lancrigg near Grasmere. It's a vegetarian place but really quite lovely.

My lovely husband took me to the Wild Boar for my 40th, it was perfect.

Possibly not the best for vegetarians, the smoked steak is amazing.

for the north lakes cottage in the wood, more a posh guest house but hard to beat the views of skidaw from the conservatory

Rothay Garden in Grasmere, also the Eltermere Inn at Elterwater. Gilpin Lodge is meant to be good but I haven't stayed there.

I've recommended the Best Western Castle Green in Kendal on here before. I've stayed more than once and found it excellent [it does very well on Tripadvisor too]:

Have a great trip and 40th anyway.
