Just an idle thought.

Has any sleeping bag manufacturer thought of putting a sleeve on the underside of their sleeping bags to retain/house sleeping mats?

Quite possibly totally impractical, but it would help to prevent sliding off the sleeping mat in the middle of the night. Probably.

But if you rolled over in your sleep wouldn't it roll the mat over with you?

Cool and clever Product Designers at Decathlon. Google - sleep in bed decathlon. Ray Jardine - of friends fame - came up with the idea. As the sleeping bag under you gets compressed anyway. Cuts down on weight if you only need the top half.

Ah compression. Brings back memories of sleeping in a net style hammock too small to fit a roll matt on and yourself... Bad memories... Shivers*

Quite a few companies have done this, or something like it - Sierra desigs, NEMO, Big Agnes.. It never really seems to catch on. I had a sierra designs bag with some straps on it to go around the pad, but I ended up just cutting them off.

Thermarest's new sleeping bags have this feature, no?

If you took an existing bag and just added a solid sleeve, you'd end up using somewhere between 1/3 or 1/2 more fabric I'd imagine, driving up price and weight.

Quilts often attach to pads, eg:

My Mountain Equipment MM bag has sleeves for balloons so effectively and integrated balloon bed. Lots of other companies do the equivalent for sleeping mats.

North Face bags have loops underneath to attach the bag to a sleeping pad - you're supposed to add your own cord, depending on width of pad. Annoyingly, on my bag, the only have them at shoulder and hip level - could do with them at ankle level, too.

+1 for quilts. I splashed out on one of these: http://katabaticgear.com/shop/alsek-sleeping-bag/ (or see here for review of similar bag: http://www.outdoorgearlab.com/Ultralight-Sleeping-Bag-Reviews/Katabatic-Gea... ) A 630g bag which, combined with e.g. an Exped SynMat UL 7, will do you down to -5 or -10 C - or lower if you wear some clothes too.
