I am just curious if there is any all encompassing way one could describe somebody with the following characteristics.

It's a friend of mine. His sole interest in life seems to be football although, being of a certain age he cannot play football, but it's about all he ever watches on television. If I suggest that we go out somewhere or do something he is likely to say "Oh no, can't go out tonight, there's a big match on". He is not very good at making or maintaining conversation yet could talk for England about football.

He does not socialise and seems to be very inept at interacting with others. He has not got what I would consider to be an enquiring mind and seems to have a very limited level of "general" knowledge and occasionally, when others mention something which, to most people, is common knowledge he appears to think "Who told you that?" or "How did you know that?" He seems easily bored or just totally disinterested in matters that would make many people think "That's fascinating" or "Ooh, I'd like to learn more about that" He seem to regard ANYONE who uses a computer as a geek and ignores the fact that they can be a source of encyclopaedic knowledge. ANY form of art or culture seems to be a turn off.

A lot of what he DOES say seems to have come straight from the gossip columns of the tabloids(think Mirror rather than Mail) and he seems unable to develop his own arguments about controversial or contentious issues.

I sometimes wonder if it's something like autism or asperbergers

I suppose that's a good catch-all ;o|

Well at least he doesn't read the Mail!

Not that the Mirror's any better.

I was interested in your need to make a distinction, why was that?

Interesting. Has he always been this way?

A member of my family went this way for a while after a few things happened to him all at once so I guess it was mild depression or similar.

As long as I've known him.

Simply - left biased tabloid as opposed to right biased tabloid

So it seems he is interested in something other than football, otherwise the distinction is irrelevant.

Just sounds like a typical but high level football supporter to me.
A lot of them in my experience do nothing except watch football (or general sports but mainly football and rugby) and have little to no interest in anything outside of that world.
They seem to get totally indoctrinated in to following their chosen sport as though it is a religion as deep as a radicalised Muslim with their faith but fortunately without the prevalence of suicide bombing.
Working out on site I come across a disturbing amount of people who live this life.

He probably only gets the Mirror for it easy to read football content. Anything else he "reads" in it is coincidental.

Oh dear. It must be tricky not to lose touch with someone who behaves like this!

Would 'Space Cadet' be appropriate- i.e. on his own football planet all the time?

When I worked on a building site the brew time conversation, well talk would be a better word, was one of:

a) football
b) last night's darts match in the pub and why someone should have gone treble 19, fifteen, double ten or whatever.
c) BoreANation Street

Invariably "b" would be the most heated.

c) The biggest poo we'd ever done

Sounds very much like a lot of climbers...

Another notion he has is that "rugby is only played by toffs", in fact describing those who seem to be in a different social class to him as "toffs" is a favourite of his. As far as the rugby analogy goes I usually counter it by reminding him that it's a game played by gentlemen with odd shaped balls ;0)

Driving through a smart area of Winsford one day he commented "this is where the toffs of Winsford live" to which I replied "which number do they live at? perhaps we could drop in for a cuppa"

A follower. It's normal at some level for everyone but sometimes people can get a bit one-dimensional.

Sounds like 80% of the people I used to work with. I remember being asked what team I supported and when I said I didn't really follow football, they looked at me with blank expressions for a few minutes before one of them said, "yeah but Bergkamp's goal last was brilliant eh?"
They just weren't equipped mentally to understand that someone wasn't interested in football.
