All Is Lost is a good film which might have slipped under your radar. I watched Begin Again last week and really enjoyed that - it's a quirky, feelgood sort of film.

In reply to Alyson:

All is lost i certainly heard of, but it got a bit slated in the reviews.
Begin Again however sounds like a cracker!

Thanks

+1 for All Is Lost - definitely worth watching. It got either 4 or 5 stars in every review I saw..

August, Osage County was a quality chick flick.
Under the Skin, bit art house but a fun portrait of modern Scotland.
Dallas buyers Club was excellent.
St Ettiene London Trilogy if you like that sort of thing
A Field in England, art house weirdness
Wolf of Wall Street, entertaining gross-out
Her, good sci-fi
Pacific Rim, pure quality.

For my money the best film from last year was "The Drop".

Hmm, Meryl and Julia in the same film is a bit too chick-flick for me!

> Under the Skin, bit art house but a fun portrait of modern Scotland.

Looks good

> Dallas buyers Club was excellent.

Seen it and loved it

> St Ettiene London Trilogy if you like that sort of thing

Ok, on the list

A little too weird for me i think

> Wolf of Wall Street, entertaining gross-out

One of my top movies

> Her, good sci-fi

Saw it, agreed

> Pacific Rim, pure quality.

Another recent-ish film which really stuck with me was The Selfish Giant, which had a very limited cinema release. I found it pretty powerful, plus it has the most extraordinarily realistic child acting I can remember seeing - to the point whether I couldn't decide if they'd actually just found a really difficult boy to play the really difficult boy!

Worth a watch, definitely.

Plus if you're in the mood for a jaw-dropping documentary, try The Act of Killing. Indonesian death-squad leaders are persuaded to re-enact their crimes in the medium of film. Extraordinary.

Just realised I used the phrase 'the medium of film'. Sorry about that..

I enjoyed Captain Phillips, if you missed that at the time.

In reply to Kimono:

Also, The Master was good, if a bit heavy. Great performances though.

I was browsing through the bargain bin and came a across a copy of "local hero". a very dated movie but id forgotten just how great a film it was, well worth a nostalgic re watch.

Not a new film ,but if you get the chance ,"Dead Mans Shoes "is worth a watch.

Shane Meadows film starring Paddy Considine.

It's dark , dark and set in Derbyshire .so all the darks then.

Something great about this film.

Neither high brow but enjoyed "Rush" and "Edge of Tomorrow" recently. Rush particularly good, Edge of Tomorrow pretty with an entertaining story - especially if you have ever spent days mastering a computer game, sadly a bit of a limp finish.
OP Kimono 13 Mar 2015
In reply to Bobling:

I think we must have similar tastes Bob!
I loved Rush and thought that EoT was one of the best sic-fi movies i had seen in years

In reply to Kimono:

ps though i do remember being a little disappointed with the ending....had i been in control, i would have ended the movie as the grenades were falling down through the water!

Instead we got Hollywood schmaltz

+1 ... Cracking film

+2 very good film, probably the best black comedy I've seen. Bit too harsh for a re-watch though, in a similar vein to Heavenly Creatures and Requiem for a Dream in that respect. A tough film all round.
