Best home insurance for cyclists/climbers etc?

Looking to insure our new home (fingers crossed, waiting on surveys, solicitors etc) and want to find a policy which suits us. We have a few nice bikes, which will be stored in a shed - so we need cover for that. Cover away from home would be nice too. If theft of bikes and/or climbing gear from car or crag could also be covered that would be super, but top priority is making sure the house and all the contents including those in the shed are covered. Ideally on a new for old basis. Any recommendations? I've heard the AA are good.

I've just had a quote from pedalcover.co.uk which are a specialist broker which we have accepted. Its underwritten by Axa and provides cover for bikes whilst being used for TTs, Triathalons and sportives. Its new for old as well. I'm not sure if it would cover gear at the crag as bikes need to be locked with at least a "cafe lock" so they would argue the gear has been left unattended.

I use M&S Premier cover. Not cheap, but AXA, the underwriters behave fairly in my experience, in the event of a claim. The loss adjusters were Cunningham Linsey, who behaved very reasonably as well.

(I've had to make two 'biggish' claims on my policy over the last few years unfortunately)

Check your policy. I used to be with M&S due to the bike cover but they changed underwriters and even for existing customers they about halved the bike cover.
They were excellent in all other aspects though, when I had to claim for my bike and when we had a bit of a flood due to a header tank they were faultless and I'd have stayed with them forever (to pay my debt to them as I saw it) but for the reduced cover.

Cheers

M&S used to be the one to have. But limit for individual cycles is now c. £1500 (from memory). Bikes above £1500 are listed as specified items with associated additional insurance cost based on bike value, Still works out as a pretty good way of insuring though.

Looking at our policy document it is just about identical to the Axa M&S policy but we are paying 1/2 the price. PedalCover were also really good in making sure that expensive wheels/power meters etc are all covered if they move bike as we swap things around a bikes value can go from 2K to 4K quite easily if I put my power meter and zipps on.

Sorry, its £2,000 limit without having to specify

Barclays took me by surprise with their willingness to list individual bikes and provide a bit of cover away from home. Mind you, because I don't keep mine in a shed I'm not sure whether that would make a difference.

We went with Direct Line Select, which is their special service for poshos. Turns out to have no limit on bikes which made it much cheaper for us. Also has the advantage of covering antique firearms (!) and the cost of a round in the clubhouse if you get a hole in one at the golf.

In all seriousness, we went there because they were cheaper but have been impressed with the service - it's clearly more of an office than a call centre when you ring them.

Just get onto one of the comparison sites and go from there. Part of the questionnaire includes specific items and you check a box for insure away from the home. All pretty standard stuff. As long as the description and value of the bikes you intend to cover are correct there shouldn't be an issue.
