Hello

Driving to the Alps on Thursday need a ski rack in a hurry.

Basic googleing reveals simple solution is blow £230 or so on a Thule set up. Amazon reveals lots of cheaper options that I've never heard of...

Any experiences to share?

If you've got roof bars, the cheap simple option would be to put a bit of foam (pipe insulation foam & duct tape), then use webbing straps - I'd keep the skis bagged to keep all the road muck off them. Could be lockable if you're creative with a bike lock.

Friend in Geneva had one which he used to go skiing pretty much every weekend for two winters. So yes they can work.

They seem very popular across the channel, if i needed to carry skis on my roof that's what I would get.
Continentals don't seem to do the roof bar/ski rack thing.
I see them all the time on cars going pretty fast...but have only used one for a couple of weeks with no problems up to 100mph.

Got my off-brand replacement roof bars for my Leon from Ebay for £44 versus £120 for Seat ones. No problems.

I got a cheap pair of ski racks from Feu Vert (French Halfords) back in the day to put on my original roof bars for about 20 Euros each I think. Lasted 10 winters in Cham before they rusted up. Maybe check online if they are still doing them and buy out there if you can manage with just the roof bars until you drive through France?
