Hi,

Off to the Lake District next week and looking for a good, hard day hike. Something around 10+ miles and 1200-1600m of gain.

Anyone got any recommendations?

Thanks!

Pillar from Buttermere. Or better, Pillar, Kirk Fell and Gable from Buttermere.

As much as you want of the Langdale skyline: Pike O'Blisco, Crinkles, Bowfell, back via the Pikes.

The Scafells from Eskdale - add more if you wish (the big version is Crinkles, Bowfell, Esk Pike, Scafells).

Helvellyn, Dollyawgon, over to Fairfield and St.Sunday from Patterdale.

Scafell from Boot
Great Gable from Grange via Gillercombe Buttress
Grange, Castle Crag, High Spy, Dale Head, Catbells and back along the lake shore
Blencathra from Keswick via Latrigg and return via Latrigg stone circle

Here's a good site http://www.walklakes.co.uk/walks.html

Any of the five legs of the Bob Graham Round. I did some route cards on here a couple of years ago for them. They vary from ten to seventeen miles, some are relatively easy to make in to a circular walk though the Helvellyn section and the Dunmail Raise to Wasdale section are trickier to do unless you have transport at either end. On the Dunmail to Wasdale leg you could start in Borrowdale, walk up to Greenup Edge then follow the route to Scafell Pike (or earlier) before cutting back to Borrowdale via the Corridor Route. More info here -http://bobwightman.co.uk/run/bgr_training_logistics.php

There's probably a lot of Lakes based route cards in addition to those.

If you want a bit of solitude, or as close as you can get in the Lakes, then how about the Kentmere Round?

You could try one of our bigger Lake District UKH Route Cards

Ennerdale skyline http://www.ukhillwalking.com/logbook/r/?i=116 ... that's pretty big for one day of course, but can be made easier by missing the odd thing out
Eskdale Round: http://www.ukhillwalking.com/logbook/r/?i=651
Scafell double dose http://www.ukhillwalking.com/logbook/r/?i=187
Scafells and Corridor Route http://www.ukhillwalking.com/logbook/r/?i=78
Yewbarrow and Pillar circle http://www.ukhillwalking.com/logbook/r/?i=174
Bowfel and Crinkle Crags (add Esk Pike and Pike of Blisco to make up the distance) http://www.ukhillwalking.com/logbook/r/?i=86

As per JS above, the Langdale Horseshoe. You can cut it short if you wish. Probably best to start up towards Pavey and go as far round as you wish e.g. as far as Bowfell and come down "the band".

I've done these two, which satisfy your criteria and might fit the bill:

Helvellyn from Patterdale: http://www.wikiloc.com/wikiloc/view.do?id=4758142

Scafells from Seathwaite: http://www.wikiloc.com/wikiloc/view.do?id=4836915

Done the Scafells from Cockley Beck Bridge before. That's a fair day out & quiet apart from the areas around the Scafell summits.

Mosedale > Across the top of Upper Eskdale/Great Moss > Cam Spout > Mickledore > Lords Rake/West Wall Traverse > Scafell > Back down Lords Rake > Mickledore > Scafell Pike > down Little Narrowcove > Upper Eskdale > Mosedale.

Slight variation. Start Cockley Beck, walk Mosedale to the Cairn at the col, then hang a right and climb the steep slope into Adam a Cove. Aim for the light scree run half left. Then over Long Top and the other Crinkles (inc the Bad Step for interest). Down to Three Tarns but go to the right of the Links and traverse over to the end of the Climbers Traverse.

Traverse is fantastic, then after a drink at the spring a choice....

Either direct up the slabs to Bowfell summit, then to Esk Pike via Ore gap. Do Esk Pike South Ridge down to Lingcove Bridge and then back over the col into Mosedale for a finish.

Or traverse the steep slope to hit the path at the big zig zag heading for Rosett Pike, then go up to Ore gap past Angle Tarn, returning to Mosedale either by Bowfell or Esk Pike and South Ridge.

All nice and interesting on the navigation front and although you will see some people on the main ridge, generally pretty quiet.

Indeed, as discussed on here in some other recentish thread. (Although I did the Pike from Coniston, not Scafell itself.) High Stile from Coniston is also good, but best not to try it on a mega hot day.
