Hi,
I'm buying a new ice axe to use on fairly difficult walks (snow gullies ect) and low grade mixed and ice routes. Would you recommend a traditional straight handled axe or something like a dmm raptor?
Cheers for any help

In reply to ACollins:

In my experience a straight shafted axe is best because it's easier to plunge. Having said that I've never used one of the newer design of climbing axes with a straight lower shaft.

If I was getting a new walking/mountaineering axe, I would defo get a Raptor type axe over a straight shafted. Don't think the curved shaft would effect plunging that much and would be far outwieghed by the advantages (mainly better swing, better knuckle clearance).

If steep gullies and moderate mix and ice climbing are your business, than something like Petzl Sum´tec or Grivel Light Machine are tough to beat.
In reply to mick taylor:

Ok thanks Mick I think I'll go for an raptor style, cheers for the advice.

Ok thanks matejn I'll try and have a look at a petzl, grivel looks good but a bit out of the budget, most gear that shiny is
