Hi all,

I'm looking to book somewhere for half term week (end of May) to stay with the fam (incl 6y old daughter).

These family hols invariably involve me disappearing climbing for a couple of days so wife doesn't want to be anywhere too remote. So thinking about Windermere, where she will have shops, lake etc at her disposal.

Anyone have any good experiences of family hol venue in Lakes, not necessarily Windermere, but somewhere with fun for the family? Are there any good holiday chalet-type places worth considering?

Thanks

Not sure if this fits the bill, but we stopped over there on the way to/from Scotland recently, and found two good hotels:
1. North Lakes hotel in Penrith. Good bargain family room rate. Lovely pool. http://www.shirehotels.co.uk/our-hotels/north-lakes/
2. A really fancy hotel, the Lodor Falls, but RIGHT next to Shepherd's Crag (for you) and loads of stuff including shopping and indoor climbing (for them) at Keswick. http://www.lakedistricthotels.net/lodorefalls/index.php

Both recommended.

There's a Center Parcs near Penrith. A bit outside the Lakes, but plenty to keep the family going, especially if the weather's crap.

Low Wood Hotel is worth a look. Spa & pool could be a hit with the family, Lake at the front door and midway between Ambleside and Windermere.

Depends on your budget really. Towing a fairly big family to Lakes for many years we went to Greenhowe Holiday Park in Langdale. Mainly static caravans but some very nice lodges too. If money no object there are loads of other options around Ambleside and also Coniston which are never too far from some sort of entertainment/civilisation!

We found that overall for a family break the SW Lakes had more to offer than the North (that's not to say that Borrowdale, Keswick aren't good, they are lovely!). The other place we stayed, but many many years ago was Limefitt Park Troutbeck which is very handy for Windermere, but I think has gone a bit up market since we went there!
