Tomorrow I shall likely be pottering up the A9 back home to Inverness. I'm pretty familiar with this road and some of the areas surrounding it.

What might I have overlooked? What hidden gems should I check out? Tending towards historical sites but all suggestions welcome.

Ta.

For the true gems you need to carry on beyond Inverness.

Stop off at the hobo's camp and shoot the breeze for an hour. It might well be the worst time you'll ever have in your life but it's always good to know the worst is behind you and you're on easy street all the way to your death.

It's no longer the car and tiny tent it once was. It's now more car and large tent village. I was surprised to see how much bigger his encampment was last time I drove by.

Admittedly I went a bit further off the A9 than initially intended but I visited a Roman fort, stood in the shadow of a 5000 year old tree and ran up a hill with an important place in the history of science and cartography.

I'd say that compares well with anything I could have done north of Inverness.

AdrianC - I'll save the gathering stone for another day, thanks

Campster cairns? Morven? Cut over Glen Loth and up Strath Halladale, Golspie and the Duke of Sutherland, Herring fishing steps at Lybster? Dunrobin castle, Clynelish distillery?

I could go on.........but I won't.
