I know it's been hard between us. The special relationship has, on occasion, lost its sparkle. The heat of uncertainty forged in those war years has sometimes perhaps struggled to find the same potency in the cut and thrust of the modern world.
I admit it. At times I have been less than fully supportive of you. Some home truths have been said, and not always to your face, the proper way. It's been easy to mock your politics, your culture, and - let's be honest - what passes for beer.
So I want to apologise. Today you showed that, whilst it was all happening in plain view, only your FBI had the gumption to get up and do something about it.
And I love you for that. I hope you go right to the top.
A word to the wise though; it's "football".
