Inevitable perhaps, but sad nonetheless.

How frustrating must it have been to have had great talents, a desire to make a difference, be so close to power but never quite close enough?

A once-great, decent, and very clever man.

His descent and death have been a great loss to politics.

But at least he stuck to his principals rather than selling out and saying whatever was necessary to claw power. A sad loss.
