I'm looking to do some outdoor climbing and want to head to Harrisons this weekend. I've bouldered outdoors, and regularly lead and top rope indoors, however this will be the first time doing ropes on rock.

Whats the best setup to Top rope at Harrisons? Will i be able to use a 4m sling with a 2m safety sling, or will i need to use static rope?

Thanks in advance

Have a look at https://www.thebmc.co.uk/top-5-skills-for-southern-sandstone .There' a link to a BMC TV on how to set up tope ropes on Southern Sandstone. A short length (4 or 5m?) is ideal.

I have been there once, and from my experience, definitely use a static rope ... 30m would be enough I think.... A 120m sling or even a a 5-6 m dynamic rope, which you can use with the belay bolts at the top.. make sure they are long enough so the karabiner and rope can hang over the edge of the crag such that no rope movement and karabiner comes in contact or rub against the rock.

You can find more information here
http://www.southernsandstoneclimbs.co.uk/p/equipment.html

BMC has release a couple of videos to help you with that

If you still find it confustin , I would say just go there and you will find people to help you with as long as you have all the necessary equipment.

Happy Climbing

I take a 10m length of static for setting up top rope. Some people say take 5m, but it's better to have a bit more as some routes are bolted a little bit back from the edge, or in some cases you use a tree or stump.
On most routes though you'lll get by with your 2 slings.
Rope protector or bit of carpet is a must. If often forget these and end up using my car mats.

Standard top-roping is not recommended there. Climbers should be belayed through the static set-up at the top following the advice on the link but then should top out (not be lowered).
