NEWSFLASH: Climbers Stranded after Mt Kinabalu Quake

Sunrise on Mount Kinabalu, 2 kbAs reported in the mainstream media, an earthquake has hit Malaysia resulting in climbers becoming stranded on South East Asia's highest peak, Mount Kinabalu.

That guest house is no different to many of the larger huts in the alps...

I was picturing them taking a break in a guest house as 'it' took them (moved) to safety....

Well it's good to see that the local Malaysian reporting of accidents is as good as the British newspapers.

Sadly at least 16 people were killed on the mountain and 2 or 3 people still remain unaccounted for. The remain of 2 people were found today. There is a pretty good safety system on the mountain whereby you're checked into the park, into Laban Rata the hut, the top hut (Laban Laban) on the way up and also on the way down. This reduces the area where the search parties have to look. Searching for people on Mt Kinabalu is not the same as looking for lost people in the Cairngorms!

Many people are shocked and surprised by this accident and our thoughts go to those people affected.
