Thanks

I would say it's quite tricky - and I've replaced screens and other internal components on Apple Laptops (before the latest generation of glued-in batteries and soldered RAM)

Apple devices are notoriously hard to repair, they want to discourage people from trying it. They use a lot of glue instead of or in addition to screws.

The site pneame linked is great. They have guides for every version of the ipad mini (the link is for original version, with the american version of 3G), if you start at https://www.ifixit.com/Device/iPad you should be able to find the instructions for your exact device.

Also note that in most devices the 'screen' is in two parts, the LCD, which displays things, and the front panel/digitiser which sits just in front and includes the touch components. If the screen still shows images OK, then you probably only need to replace the front panel assembly, which is much cheaper.

If you haven't dismantled/repaired electronics much before, then modern Apple isn't the best place to start. I'm happy working on most laptops and android phones, but would probably send an ipad mini off to a repairer.

Jack B summarizes my feelings also - I've dismantled an original iPhone with a vain hope of resurrecting it after I, er, washed it (I possibly should have let it carry on through the rinse cycle ), but I'd be loath to attempt repairs on anything made in the last few years.

A cracked front panel used to be fairly easy (undo a couple of screws, a bit of bezel prying, slide, replace, a bit of bezel re-attachment together with required swearing, reinsert screws. New iDevices aren't nearly as easy as they use, as Jack B says, much glue, as you can tell by the guide.

This site gives you an idea of the likely cost:

And for your amusement what Apple charges:

Thanks everyone for the advice, think I will have to get someone to do it or the bill will be considerably higher! !

You need heat to soften the adhesive and a lot of patience to keep going at the edges to get the front glass free. The thing you'll struggle with is the adhesive strips that come with the repair kits, basically it's shit! I get mine from the U.S. and they are made from the original Apple spec and die cut to perfectly fit each iPad model. The price of the iPad mini is usually a little higher than the standard iPad as the mini has some circuitry built onto the screen ribbon cable so costs a little more for the part. To give you an idea, I charge £55 for iPad mini screen replacements and you should find someone local to you for about that price. Hopi that helps.
