Seeing as I am as close to the longest day as possible, is it worth a punt and trying my first ever star trails tonight?

The sky's are clear and the tide is at its lowest at around 23-00hrs.

Also some tips would be awesome.

Cheers muchly

Have a read of: http://www.ukclimbing.com/articles/page.php?id=6741 for some tips

It is possible to do star trails in the middle of summer, it just results in a very late night as it takes so long to get dark. In the winter you can be done by 8pm.

One I did a few nights ago: https://m.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10101191836677153&id=61207635&...

Have fun, make sure you post the result!

Just been reading and it seems like this time of year is best to see and photograph the Milky Way.

Unfortunately I live on the coast so I am awash with light pollution.

It gets darkest around 1am though.

Why is it the best now? It doesn't ever get properly dark at this time of year in N England, just night-long twilight.

Some website says that the position of the earth and the sun make for better observation.

I however have no idea. I don't even know where to look yet.

I tried this last weekend. At 2am still wasn't completely dark even with the cloud cover that had come over.
Give it a go, but I think I will wait to September to try again.
It was good practice though trying to get the correct camera settings.
