Hi all,

I've recently developed a liking for the old fashioned. How do you drink yours?

I'm currently on Wild Turkey 89, 4/5 dashes or angostura and just a bit of sugar.

Which bitters do you use? Which sugar? Muddled fruit or just a twist?

Interested to hear how differently people do it!

Sounds like a fine example of how a whole can be so much less than the sum of its parts.

G'wan then:

Woodford Reserve, Rip Van Winkle, or Bulleit. Muddled orange rind, few dashes of bitters (Peychaud's or Angostora is good, but newer stuff like The Bitter Truth is good for experiments). Tiny tiny bit of sugar syrup, not granulated as it doesn't really dissolve proper. Of course stir for a long time..... Ice goes in one cube at a time. No water or tonic (obviously) and a morello cherry.

Cheers!

Ice, 1 part vodka, 1 part Kahlua, 1.5 parts milk, served in a coconut half.

Do you find different bitters go better with different whisky?

I'm feeling it's going to take s lot of whisky to experiment, only changing one ingredient at a time...

In reply to Dervey:

PS, the spirits mentioned are whiskey, not whisky.

Well pointed out, whisky being only scotch

Probably, but I couldn't tell you which.. The most important thing by far is a good bourbon or rye.

Edit: Shoutout to the White Russian also. Mmmmm.
And Black Russian.

it is indeed a great cocktail, but one which can be a horror when made badly.
Im also partial to a mint julep

What! Mushing a cherry and orange slice (not rind) into it does not an Old Fashioned make. Sacrilege.

Old fashioned is fantastic...sugar syrup dissolves easier, I use Regan's orange bitters no. 6..Makers Mark bourbon..

But I also love a Sazerac....
