Quick Question

Hello
I'm quite new to climbing and have a question.
So i'm about to order a basic sports harness (feel free to recommend any).

I'm looking for a 3 meter rope with carabiners on either end.
I will attach one end of the dynamic rope to the top of a wall, throw it down and attach the other end to my harness at the bottom, then climb up and down using it for practice.

My question is, what is the best way to go about this as I only see rope being sold in 30m lengths!
Is this type of rope available or would I need to figure out how to knot and cut a longer rope?

Thanks, I really appreciate any help!

In reply to Pearsonia:

Are you planning that the rope will catch you if you fall?
Pearsonia 11 Jul 2015
In reply to Greasy Prusiks:

Yes! The rope will reach around half way down the wall, so it will safely catch me.

In reply to Pearsonia:

So to clarify you're climbing a six meter high route, climbing the first 3m solo then clipping in to the rope for the final 3m?

In reply to Pearsonia:

Awful idea! What happen's if you fall before you clip your dangling rope?

Why don't you rely on quikdraws and your lead rope?

In reply to Greasy Prusiks:

Yes correct. There is a ladder and platform on the side that I can climb to and attach to make it easier.

In reply to goose299:

The first three meters can be climbed by ladder on the side of the wall to a platform to attach.

Personally I wouldn't climb like that however it's an interesting idea. I can't think of a ready-made product that matches what you describe.

Of your looking for ways to practice on your own bouldering is a really great thing to do. That will definitely help improve your sports climbing especially if your new to climbing.

Whatever you do have a great time climbing!

How are you coming down? The fall from the top would not be that nice.

Take a look at solo top-roping, you might have to invest a little bit more, but you would be way more safer.

In reply to Pearsonia:

Like I said before, buy some draws and actually just sport climb

In reply to Pearsonia:

If you're doing what I think you intend to do, then don't!
You could in theory be taking a Fall Factor 1 fall and with no belaying action to eliminate any of the force that will ultimately be transmitted to you.

Sounds like good practice for grit!

Please tell me this is a wind up
In reply to Pearsonia:

You want a bouldering pad and not climb quite as high.

In reply to Pearsonia:

Aye, a fall off that set up would hurt a lot.

In reply to Pearsonia:

Make sure you get a troll harness, only one's certified for this technique.

Nomination for a Darwin Award?

In reply to Pearsonia:

Is your wall vertical?

Maybe give some thought to making it a very steep overhang. Then when you fall off you'll enjoy a gentle swing rather than a bone jarring jolt. With only 3m of rope there won't be much elasticity.

Oh come on, it's quite unlikely that he's going to remove himself from the gene pool on a six metre wall, and he's not stupid enough to attach himself by the hairy gooseberries!

I've just reread the original post, I retract that last comment!

In reply to EddInaBox:

Using Whillans (Troll) harness might effectively remove him from the gene pool. So that would be a bronze award not a gold.
