I have just done my ML Training and the feedback was that I need to learn my plants and animals (and clouds). Does anybody know of a good book for this? I have been looking on amazon but i am struggling.

PS. the course was fantastic and I recommend it to anybody.

If you find plants and animals together in one book, it's unlikely to be a very good book. Go for a dedicated wildflower key, and don't feel you have to buy a new one - plants don't change! A cheap second hand copy will be just as good. Check the size before you buy, some really aren't very portable.

I'd always recommend a good illustrated one over a photo guide. I have Collins Pocket Guide to Wild Flowers by Fitter, Fitter and Blamey, and I've never needed anything else.

Animals are easier. A decent photo guide should do the job.

Nature of Snowdonia by Mike Raine is what you want.

Covers the upland species of the UK (except a few in Scotland), and doesn't go into too much detail, but gives you enough info. Good to take it out with you too, and try to identify things in the field.

Yep. There's a book called something like 'how to read the landscape' which is excellent for geographical features too.

It's written for the Scottish hills, but the SMC Hostile Habitats book is a good all round guide: http://www.smc.org.uk/publications/?ID=29

I'll second Hostile Habitats, it's essential ML reading!

For those more technologically minded, I have also been recommended this app:

If you want a good, broad book, I would recommend the Pathfinder Countryside Companion. Used copies are a couple of quid and it is a small, thin guide that fits easily in to a pocket: http://amzn.to/1Rwj8mp

There are also sites out there with free 'spotters' guides that can be downloaded to phone. http://www.plantlife.org.uk/explore_nature/id_sheets/

That flora and fauna app is really good - esp. the flora which I used to mug up for my ML assessment last year. I did get the Collins wildflower book on Kindle too, but found the app more useful.

The other recommendations here - Nature of Snowdonia and Hostile Habitats, are both excellent and worth looking at or getting.
