I'm thinking of a wee stop-off at Armathwaite to break up a long drive north-south at some point, is the bouldering there easy to find without a guidebook?

Also is it obvious independent problems, or a rules-heavy eliminate type of place?

Yep, it's dead easy. As suggested by liquid take a look at the Lakes Bloc site, it's got everything you'll need. That said, I certainly managed without on my first visit: it's pretty easy to find and all the major up lines are pretty self explanatory (once you've done those start eliminating!).

It's also worth mentioning that if you traverse round to the neighbouring bay (looking at the river, traversing right) you'll find some faces that have been carved into the sandstone - well worth a look...
