Hi, we have decided to give millstone edge a try tomorrow. Is the parking apparent and are there any land marks that will help me find the place. I will be driving from Macclesfield.cheers

In reply to DWS gibraltar:

Yes, it's obvious, at the top of the hill from Hathersage. It's called Surprise View.

In reply to DWS gibraltar:

confusingly, the P&D is very apparent on the road up from Hathersage toward Chesterfield but it's called Surprise View

In reply to DWS gibraltar:

Or, for at least one motorist a year, suprise bend.

In reply to DWS gibraltar:

Dont forget to take your bank card to pay for the ticket, if your lucky the machine wont be working and you can park for free!!!

Except that it's not towards Chesterfield, it's towards Fox House/ Sheffield.

It's much more obvious why that bend is called Surprise View when driving the other way from Sheffield towards Hathersage. (And as DerwentDiluted says, every once in a while it surprises the odd driver much more than the rest.)

In reply to toad:

As said the Surprise View is when you encounter it from the other direction as from Fox House. I have old postcards from my grandfather showing open bus party trips as they turned the corner with the title , Surprise View .

I don't know why folk don't just park at the bottom of Embankment Wall like I did last time I was there.

Remember when it was drive to your climb , belay keyhole cave routes from the passenger seat of the car, the picture of Tom Proctor on the top pitch of Great Arete shows it well ( might be in Peak Rock ) with Escort vans parked around and Millstone regular John Conn leaning against Tom's van.

Hi Bill,
Yes, I remember driving up to pick up Geoff Radcliffe after he had sprained his ankle whilst trying to solo one of the routes right of Great Slab! Didn't do a great deal for the suspension though!

In reply to Graham Hoey:

Or his ankle bumping back down, I'd imagine! The only time I've ever sprained my ankle was on Technical Master (f6B) - I was all of one move off the ground. Luckily I could just step into the car...

In reply to jon:

It just seemed like a petty move when the boulders were placed to stop the drive up, only climbers were ever stupid enough to do it anyway, I think the last straw was when the escourt got dumped there that the seats of were used as boulder mats for for Scrittos Republic.

A bit of info about Technical Master (f6B) , just a few memories . When to Millstone one night with Keith Myhill as we went pass the embankment he said had I seen this and climbed up what is now Technical Master very easily , he said he had seen Little Jim from Manchester do it some time before.
Maybe 6 months later I came across Ed Drumond working the line and covered in chalk and when I told him it had been climbed and I had seen Keith do it he would not believe it and seemed quite mad. He did climb it later and gave it the name Technical Master.
At a later date after I had worked it out ,, I was keen to show it to Andy Parkin and let him work it out himself . I remember walking under embankment 1 with Andy behind me and saying its this arete , I walked on a few more paces , turned to see him pull onto the top with his toes sticking out off his clapped out EBs ,
