What are peoples experiences of this? Most people I know have some sort of ball / squeezing device, some going to further extents... The perfect opportunity for a bit of stamina training?

This is why I try to stay off the road as much as possible.

I do keegle excercises and have a squeeze thing for the hands. Shoulder rolls as well but that's so I don't turn into the hunchback of notre Dame after a couple hours behind the wheel.

I use a TRX supension trainer off the grap handles, and have pulleys to a weight stack in the boot for upper body strength training.
In my van, I have removed the front seat and installed a step machine, it makes long trips to scotland fly by, although sometimes I'm too tired to leave the car park once I get there.

I use the brake and accelerator pedals as a step machine, at a high cadence this gives me a really good work out on the motorway, and the resulting occasional skids help the arm strength up
In reply to Dan Arkle:

Step machine? Were talking climbing training here not bumbling..
In reply to Paul Crusher R:

I wired up the power steering motor in reverse and now get a great upper body workout when turning corners.

You could try installing the power steering sensor backwards, so that rather than assisting you it fights your every action? Should be good for the arms. If you want to work on finger strength at the same time, you could get one of those neoprene steering wheel covers and put some grease inside, so you gave to squeeze it against the wheel to get any grip.

Edit: Bah! Too slow.

Personally I was thinking of installing an EMS device to the gear stick as I'm weaker on the left hand, but steering wheel hmmm i'd never thought of that..
In reply to Paul Crusher R:

Drill some monos into the steering wheel and steer using only your pinky.

Depends on where you're driving and road/traffic conditions, but in short yes. Grip strenth stuff, abdomial stuff, hamstrings (pushing feet into floor w/ bent knees). Your choice, don't be an idiot. Sitting in traffic? Yeh sure, knock out a few reps on the grip strength etc.
