A friend of mine is looking for advice on French maps for iPhone. Much to my regret I haven't been able to help him as I should like (I always use paper). So please would someone be kind enough to advise on the best solution? He will be walking 600 miles across France and needs to be able to download rather than using mobile data. Unfortunately his route is not a GR so there's no guidebook which would do the trick for him in advance.

Many thanks for any advice,

Matthew

Viewranger for iOS allows you to buy individual tiles of 1:25k and 1:100k. This might help

I downloaded this app and it seems to have the same level of detail as the paper IGN maps.

I don't use it much though, I prefer to print out a map/route from tracedetrail.fr so I can scribble over it, get it wet etc.

In reply to MGA: I've found that viewranger is not very reliable in France/Spain. I don't know what the problem is, but it can place you a great distance from your actual location sometimes.

http://tab.geoportail.fr Can be a good reference particularly if you are planning routes from home.

http://xn--iphignie-f1a.com/ is an excellent app. All of france at 1:25000 - app costs about 4 quid and you need to get the annual subscription (10 quid) if you want offline maps. Note that you must get the annual subscription not the monthly one, as if the monthly one doesn't include downloadable maps and you can't upgrade to the annual subscription until after your month is up (if you do by accident, email the developers who will sort). Really good.

(The app isn't in french btw)

This page lists the available (official) applications that use the maps of the IGN, the french cartography institute. It also gives a description of the main functions and use. Learn French, or befriend Google translate

I use iphigenie alot. needs a bit of prep sometimes if you are going to be out of signal (or not using roaming for a UK phone) to download all the relevant tiles that you nay need, but I have been very happy with it.

France Outdoors. Free 100MB download of 1:25000 mapping, which amounts to several maps-worth, and reliable too. Picks up an accurate GPS position within about 20 seconds on my old iphone. Brilliant free app, recommended.
