Unseasonal requests for the northern hemisphere I know, but I wonder if anyone on here has tried the Meidjo binding?

https://www.the-m-equipment.com/

Early ones well reviewed but beta; reinforced and tweaked for this season...

For long and dull reasons I can buy new NTN boots and bindings for less than a new pair of duckbills in NZ, and I have the boots already (Scarpa Terminator Xs) so need to decide Rottefella (Freedom) vs Meidjo vs 22Designs Outlaw. Anyone actually skied them? Any gems of advice? I don't tour anywhere near as much as i want to so to be fair it's mostly about the down at present...

Cheers

Damn - they've only gone and done it...

In reply to ben b:

Unfortunately haven't skied anything elsde 'cept the old NTN Freeride.

That said, other than being slightly heavy and not full range free pivot, they work like a charm.

While the Meidjo looks interesting, I'd prolly just stick with Rotte Freedom for generic skiing. And for lightweight touring rig, it would most likely be TTS (or if I can get a good deal, then the Ski Trab NTN binder).

In reply to HeMa:

thanks Hema. Reports of the Freedoms switching from tele mode to tour mode unexpectedly due to snow build up (and it sounds like NZ snow at that) make me a bit nervous...

In reply to ben b:

Well, I think the culprit is bad clean-out under the switch when changing the modes.

Same thing as people complaining about dynafits pre-releasing, when they haven't cleaned the inserts and verified the toes are indeed correctly closed (ie. try lockin' the toes before returning them to ski-mode).

In reply to HeMa:

Quite likely. I have some Freedoms en route from the good folk of telemarkpyrenees.com so hopefully will find out in a while. A decision made at least 50% on price, to be fair, but quite looking forward to a play in the snow again!

I've used both Rottefella NTN bindings, neither is that great for touring, even the Freedom. This new binding looks good, but then so did the Freedom!

Can it take a ski crampon?

In reply to top cat:

Rumour has it that a ski crampon will be available this autumn; I'm not sure about retrofitting dynafits though.

In reply to ben b:

Prolly Meidjo will have it's own cramps...

And the new binder I was talkin' about is not Trab, but the other Italian manufacturer AKT.

With these and B&D gears cramp-mounts, you can use normal dynafiddles, or B&D gears cramps.

I demoed the Meidjo's at the start of last season and they were great. Lighter than other NTN options but felt solid to ski. Didn't try skinning, but having used alpine tech bindings I'm confident they'll be good. Probably going to buy some for this season.

There's a good overview of NTN/tech systems here:

My Freedoms are just being mounted - just in time for the end of the season! Not sure I can get time off work to give them a try but really want to nail the transition to NTN ahead of next season.

brian_m - would be keen to hear how you get on if you switch to Meidjo.

cheers

Hi guys, and Hi HeMa!!, .. first time here.

I’m converting to NTN this year. And return to tely after 5-6 years of 100% dynafitting. So I went to shop today and got brand new TX Comps. Nice weight – not much ROM.

For me TTS and Meidjo are too suspicious and too expensive for experimenting. I guess Meidjo could be really nice, but for my eyes it is appears to be very complex with too many small bits and pieces – something 100% opposite to what we could call: “Simple-Solid-Backcountry”.

One of my touring friends went eventually back to Voile SBs because the TTS concept failed for him. So, I decide to take some weight penalty of 22d outlaws and give them try. It appears to be bomb proof and it has free pivot for kick turns on deep and steeps.

If I need to go really light, then I can always take my AT setup with me. (or 3-pins).

In reply to Tobie: Hi Tobi*, and welcome to ukc.

I hadn't realised the outlaws had been released - interested to hear how you get on with them . they look pretty solid but i'm not sure about how well they release in real-world usage (I know they aren't meant to be release bindings but...).

Please post back about how you get on this winter, I'd be keen to hear!

Cheers

*Oddly enough from my perspective, your name is the trade name of an inhaled antibiotic used in the treatment of cystic fibrosis... "Hi Tobi" not being a word pairing I thought I would ever use before!
