My screw gate makes slightly worrying squeaky noises when I open the gate.
Do I clean it or lubricate it?
What should/n't I use?

WD40, then wipe clean.

I use GT85 rather than WD40. It not only drives moisture out but also lubricates with PTFE.

I use Metolius Cam Lube whenever I have some climbing gear that needs oiling. Dunno quite what the difference is, but I figure if it's fine for cams it probably won't harm any other gear. Worked pretty well on my front door lock too.
