We're on the way to zillertal following a crappy forecast for the French Alps.

So a number of questions follow:

1) Where can we pick up a guidebook?

2) Where could we park up a van?

3) Given its hotter than we would like, are there any good shadier sport crags or bouldering areas?

4) Are there any nice mountain huts worth checking out?

5) Are there any cool alpine meadows for a night under the stars?

6) Any other tips/thoughts?

Many thanks!

The guidebook is excellent. As to where you could buy it locally, dunno, sorry. Probably at klettershop zillertal in Zell

The climbing in Zillertal is mostly up at the head of the valley and wetter.orf.at is saying 8 to 14 degrees at 1500 metres. Too hot? But Zillergrund Wald & Ginzling, for example, are in the trees and shady.

There's a nice hotel/bar in Goetzens called BiNi's, my friends parents own it. Worth going in for a meal/weekend beers as it's got a great reputation. (BiNi's stands for Bianca and Nicole - his daughters. Bianca is my friend).

I'd just been looking at the innsbruck forecast which was hitting 29 degrees.

Any van tips would still be appreciated.

Thanks.

If you go to mayrhofen, you can get the guide at either the salewa shop or the book shop on the main street, you're then well placed for crags at ginzling or brandberg. if you go to the info centre there's loads of free maps and info about walks , huts etc. The via ferrata are well worth doing (see attached) especially the nasenwand at ginzling if your tips get too sore. there's a roadside campsite at Breitlahner next to the crags there. You may be able to park up outside mayrhofen on the left after the bridge over the river, after turning right just before the railway station. The zillertal beer is great, one euro a bottle in the supermarkets or about 4 euro a pint in the bars.

Make sure you get a vignette for the motorways or you'll cop a fine, try motorway services before entering Austria!

Knorren had a topo bolted to the crag a few years ago and paper copies were available at the lift station. Its above 2000m so a possibility if its really hot in the valley.

The zillertal beer is excellent!
