Currently no fixed phone line into our flat (Glasgow). We've been using a 3 dongle.

Any recommendations on a provider for broadband?

Does BT provide the fixed line?

It should show you what packages are available in your area and the speeds you are likely to get.

I have Virgin broadband via cable. It consistently gives me 50 Mb/s.

if its sky, BT or talk talk you go with then it will be openreach that provide your line into the house, but you may have virgin if your in Glasgow in which case virgin do it themselves as they have their own network.
just work through one provider for phone and broadband and possibly tv depending on what you have at the moment.
usually works out cheaper if you take a package.
as to who's the best, hard to say and I deal with them every day .
I hear good and bad about them all from customers but plusnet seem to get the best feedback from the customers I deal with.

If you download stay away from the BT providers, they don't require court orders for ip lease/subscription information requests.
