After having pains in my neck, arms and shoulders for some time now and lots of trips to gp's and physiotherapists, I finally have a diagnosis = clavicular Spondylitis in my neck.next step = spinal specialist. I am 44 have been climbing around the low grades for about 3 years, so is this the end of any mountaineering based activities or am I been pessimistic?

Any advice appreciated.

Graham.

Clavicular?? If you mean Cervical, I've had it for years - on account of stress/bad posture/bad VDU practice over years on computer systems.

The only climbing downside is looking up belaying. Unless of course it flares up and m usclesgo into spasm, in which case OUCH, physios etc.

For me, simple management of the condition means I don't really notice it now.

clavicular Spondylitis in my neck.....you must be deformed beyond all recognition..give up climbing and join a circus!!!
A good physio with this diagnosis..will intially laugh!!!, then treat you..and following their advice!!! and this is very important, will improve your condition!!!

I've got 3 prolapsed discs and 2 damaged vertebra in my neck. Got a bit of nerve impingement thrown in for good measure. Has this stopped me climbing?

No.

OK, I was out of action and off work, as in losing the use of my arms and upper body for 9 months. But now I'm back up to messing around at the wall. My goal for this winter is to either lead or dog-up a 7a again.

Don't loose heart, and invest in a good pair of belay glasses. These are the ones I use.

If you can afford it, then make friends with a good physio. Don't even bother with an NHS physio as they are as useful as a chocolate fire-guard.

I can't due to my dyslexia remember if it was clavicular or cervicular, despite my requests for him to write it down for me!!

I don't know what that diagnosis means; nor do I know what problems you're having. But I can tell you that more-or-less every committed climber/alpinist I know has - or has had - their fair share of physical problems and injuries (including some very serious ones); and finds - or at least tries to find! - ways around them in order to continue pursuing the activity. The objective is to try to find effective ways of 'managing' the condition.

My summary would be: take advice from the quacks - but recognise that they're only human, and don't have all the answers. Listen to your body - and continue to do what you can - or, at least, what you actually *want* to do.

Good luck!
