Is there any reason to extend hex's with quickdraws when trad climbing?
At the moment I just use a wire-gate crab on the sling of each hex. I would extend if necessary to avoid rope drag or if wire-gate was cross-loaded over rock etc
It only needs extending if not doing so would increase the drag on your rope i.e. under an overhang or if it is placed off to the side with respect to where the climb goes above the nut.
