In reply to Mark Kemball:
We've got a Garmin in our car. It came with the car and, as with all GPS things, I am amazed at what it can do. It is really helpful on long journeys on unfamiliar routes to be told when your junction is coming up, which lane to get in, which directions to look out for on the signs, and how many miles it is to go. "Are we there yet? No....".
However, we did find last summer, when driving to the Dolomites, that if we relied solely on the Garmin, then it was like driving in a bubble. We always knew how many miles it was until the next junction or whatever, but we had no idea where we were, in the grand scheme of things. Thus, when driving as far as Munich began to seem like too much for the day, it was only because I had bought a road atlas at a service station that we could tell that we were very close to Heidelberg, and so could decide to veer off and head for there for the night, and have a jolly time watching the World Cup final in a bar stuffed with Germans.
