Things I heard:

Bees
Ravens
A steam train in the far distance (where?)
A horse clip-clopping down the road
Me singing
Partner chatting
Climbing gear chingling
My heart thudding just before a tricky move
Occasional rocks falling
The wind in the leaves

... and not another thing, apart from a brief greeting with one person walking past - I think doing some gardening (thank you, whoever you are), and otherwise not a soul there but for us, in glorious peaceful sunshine. Not that we would have minded anyone else being there, but as it was it was quite magical.

East somerset steam railway is a few KM away... It's a great venue considering its a dirty great big hole in the ground!

There are some other gems worth visiting in the Mendips.

Things I heard in the Avon Gorge on Suspension Bridge Buttress - traffic mostly, and the bang from a base-jumper's parachute opening just behind me. That alerted to me to the second jumper. Not something I'd seen before. Nice to see that there are people around whose working parts are even more loosely held in place than mine.

Thank you for the suggestions, I will investigate.

Aaghgh. I think I would find that quite alarming, or at least distracting.

In reply to James Jackson:

Mells does indeed look lovely, but the grades are mostly a bit high for a middle-aged waddle-mum

The mutant looks amazing. I'm considering making the 2-3 hour drive there if there is a good dry weather window at some point. Doubt it :/

Fair one! The Mendip Quarries are not ideal for the Diff / VDiff climber - it tends to either be steep, strenuous or chossy (or sometimes all of the above). There is some stuff at Cheddar in that range, but it's not great. Ubley Warren and the Charterhouse outcrops have some good fun short stuff that can be climbed at just about any grade. Portishead Quarry has a couple of Diff / VDiff routes.
