Just changed the ceiling lights in my living room, go to flip the breaker back on and nothing, like the whole circuits dead.

Had red and black sheathed cables coming out the ceiling, wired the red to live and the black to neutral, also connected an old manky looking earth wire to the new light fitting.

Have now taken the earth off to see if that was messing with things but the circuit still seems dead.

Any suggestions on the blatantly obvious thing I must be missing????

Has the RCD (if fitted) for that side of the board tripped?

Had it isolated for the works but Cher's for the suggestion bud.

Just got it sorted, there was actually 2 seperate cables on the black sheath?

Clearly I wired in the defunct one, does leave me wondering what the hell the second ones for though????

Just opened up the second light in the living room and it has the 2 black wires twisted together to go into the same neutral connection point.

I'm starting to wonder if Heath Robinson lived here before me....

There aren't either 2 light fittings or 2 switches involved in the same circuit by any chance are there?

Is one of them neutral and one switched live?

Seems like a previous owner has run a spur off of the light circuit for the living room (2 lights, each with its own switch) to feed the lights in the hall.

Got everything working fine now but was bloody confused for a while...
