Printing PDF files - defining printer bins?

Hi,

Yes, I've googled it, and working through the results, but hoping I might get a quicker answer this way.

I am doing some work on the printing functionality in our software, which works briefly as follows:
- users define print templates as RTF files
- users select data and template for printing
- RTF file is generated, output to the printer and printed using MS Word.

As part of this, some RTF templates can define different printer bins for different pages - typically, the first page would go to a bin with headed paper and everything else would go to a bin with plain A4.

So far, so good.

The software has an option to output the document as a PDF file, in which case the process is the same as before and the generated RTF file is converted to a PDF file before being printed.

The problem is that the PDF files seem incapable of handing page-specific bins and everything gets sent to the same bin.

Has anyone come across a way of defining different bins for different pages in PDF files?

Any help gratefully received

PostScript has printer control commands, so I'd expect PDF to support them too.

So it may be down to your PDF creation; how are you doing that?

How does your RTF-Word-printer route control the selection of paper bins? PCL?

Then there's the issue of printer drivers...
