Doug Tompkins has died in a kayaking accident. He was the founder of The North Face (and later, Esprit) and climbed in Patagonia and Antarctica. With Chouinard and friends they made a new route on Fitzroy in 1968, and in 1985 Tompkins and Chouinard made the first ascent of the west face of Mt Shinn (4660m) in Antarctica.

In later years, with his wife Kris, they poured their fortune into protecting and preserving land in Patagonia. Few people have put their money where their mouth is as fully or effectively as Doug Tompkins.

That's really sad news to hear. I enjoyed watching 180 degrees south just the other night on Netflix.

In reply to Damo:
Yes. I've not been to parque pumalin itself, but have been in the area (queulat and puyuhuapi) and it is an amazing part of the world. It is also very much threatened, and Tompkins' willingness to put his money where his ideals are has helped protect large areas.

RIP

Edit: this is the link to parque pumalin- few of us will leave a more impressive legacy...

Sad news.
Tompkins and Yvon Chouinard made the 1st winter ascent of Ravens Gully Direct (VI) on The Buachaille in 1970 using curved pick ice axes. This was an eye-opener for the scots and inspired McInnes to invent the Terrordactyl.

A great legacy. A shame he died: 72 is not that old.

(Stunning park by the way)
