I'm after a pair of belay glasses and wonder if anyone can answer a few queries.

1) I've used a CU pair with contact lenses and they were great - has anyone used any type on top of normal glasses? If so how do they perform?

2) Is there much difference between CU and Y&Y for the price (around double for CU)?

3) If Y&Y are fine, is there much difference between the more:

a) Plasticy type: http://www.cragxclimbing.com/products/y-y-belay-glasses-plasfun?utm_medium=...

b) Metalic type: http://www.rockrun.com/y-y-belay-glasses?gclid=CjwKEAiAy7SzBRD_lv7quOnr6XUS...

Answers/Thoughts would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

My belay glasses are indispensable these days. I had the CUs but found them too flimsy and they fell apart. Got the Y&Y metal ones - more durable than the CUs and cheaper. I have not tried the plastic Y&Ys. I don't wear glasses

I have CU's my mate has the YY glasses. They both perform equally well but I wear spectacles and find the CU glasses sit better on the frames.

Fine as long as you can find a comfortable way of positioning both on your head which should be fine as they are quite light.

I have only used the plastic Y&Y ones. The metallic ones look like they might cope with being abused a bit more but I would go with the plastic ones unless you are particularly clumsy.

Search the forum for 'belay glasses' and you'll get plenty of results to your questions. In short, CU are the best. The other options may be enough for some people, but I've tried them and they're simply not as good. Pay for a Mondeo, you won't get a Rolls Royce.

Y&Y appears to have lost a law action from CU.
They shouldn't be sellable anyore (for sure in some countries).
Any news?

I bought a pair of Belaggles in the States a year or so ago for about half the price of the CU belay glasses. They have a bigger field of vision and work well with my glasses. It appears from their website that you could buy a pair and receive them in only a couple of days so I don't know whether they have a European distributor - I did specify the UK as a destination - and the price works out around £75... http://belaggles.com/

A couple of guys I know have bought glasses similar to the ones in the link and turned the prism the other way round - belay glasses for about £5.
I have the CU ones and really rate them as I spend a long time belaying my daughter. I bought them in Kalymnos a couple of years ago after suffering while she was climbing one of these routes which goes through the grande grotta and there are loads of rests. 45 minutes belaying finished me off! Straight off the hill and bought a pair that night. They are pricey but mine are in perfect shape after 2 years. I would say, the Y & Y ones come with a better case though.
